Looking for an interactive, gamified activity that keeps students moving, all while actively learning? This U.S. Constitution Scavenger Hunt Word Search is a winning combination of reading comprehension, movement, secret codes, mystery words, word searches, text evidence, collaboration, close reading skills and critical thinking. The core elements of a highly-effective lesson are all wrapped up into one FUN and engaging non-fiction activity that reinforces ELA skills. Also makes a great addition to your Constitution Day activities!
Topics: United States Constitution, Constitutional Convention, Amendments, Articles, Preamble, Purpose, Bill of Rights, Founding Fathers, James Madison
No prior knowledge is needed, so this activity makes a great introduction to your Branches of Government or Civics lesson plans. With their question sheet in hand, students will move around the classroom visiting 16 fact cards, citing text evidence, and building their word bank. But here’s the catchโฆ students will NOT know where to find the answer so they will have to visit, skim, browse and revisit the fact cards multiple times to find the answers. The more they interact with the information, the better it sticksโturning passive reading into active learning!
FACT CARDS: There are 16 fact cards with a short reading passage but only 12 questions. Not every fact card will be used for an answer. Students may start at ANY fact card. When students find the correct answer, they will write it on their recording sheet. Each answer includes just ONE word. The only thing you need to do is place the fact cards around the classroom!
WORD SEARCH: The answers they write down will then serve as the word bank for the word search. The word search will reveal a final mystery word once the indicated letters are unscrambled – but only if students answer correctly! This way, students must complete the activity correctly and can not simply find the words in the word search without putting in the work first. It’s essentially a built-in self-checking advantage. The small and simple word search was intentionally designed to keep students focused on learning key concepts rather than spending too much time searching for words.
TEXT EVIDENCE: On the answer sheet, students must indicate WHERE they found the answer (fact #). The fact card numbers that were USED to find an answer will then lead to a 4-digit code (but not all fact cards will be used).
With the added layer of escape room aspects of mystery words and 4-digit codes, even reluctant learners will dive in! The interactive reading makes the activity feel less like work and more like a fun challenge.
Students can work in pairs (or individually) and race to complete the questions, the word bank, the word search, the secret word, and the 4-digit code.
