Description

Patriots and Loyalists Escape Room Activity – Revolutionary War

Theย Patriots and Loyalists Escape Roomย gives students a chance to get out of their seats and solve clues! This escape room activity covers the following topics: Patriots, Loyalists, Revolutionary War, Boston Tea Party, and the Sons of Liberty. No prior knowledge is needed. I prefer to use this as an introduction activity but it could be used for review of a unit as well.

Whatโ€™s Included?

โœ… Four half page reading passages

โœ… Four decoders

โœ… Questions for each passage (multiple choice, fill in the blank and true/false)

โœ… Teacher directions

โœ… Answer key

โœ… Student directions

โœ… Hint cards

โœ… How to decode puzzles

โœ… How to save time if the activity is taking too long

โœ… Words to know: A glossary of terms

Students will practice reading comprehension and critical thinking skills to solve puzzles. Each clue will reveal interesting facts about the Patriots and Loyalists.

You do NOT need a lock! You do NOT need envelopes! You do NOT have to cut out puzzle pieces! This product is meant to make your life easy!ย Just print and go!

Please look at the preview to determine if this resource/reading level works for your age group. Younger students may need some help with some of the more difficult clues (hint cards and how to). Students have to answer questions about each passage to ensure understanding.

Students may work individually, with a partner or in small groups to solve four puzzles in order to determine the final code. I prefer partner work for best results!

An answer key and easy to follow teacher directions are provided.

Time needed: 45-60 minutes (it really all depends on your students reading skills)

You can decide how much time your students have to complete the activity. Maybe some students donโ€™t finish, but thatโ€™s OK! They still learned something new! I often stop once the first three students solve all the clues. Time management strategies are included.

Basic subtraction skills are needed, a calculator may be used if needed.

Example: 1629-1624=5

My students love these escape rooms and I love that they incorporate our history and reading standards in one material!

  2. Jina Z. –

This Escape Room was perfect for fueling my class’s interest in both Loyalists and Patriots. I used it with students ranging from 2nd to 5th grade, and it worked well for advanced 3rd graders, 4th and 5th mainly. While some students struggled, working together as a team helped them decode the clues and work through the process.

  3. Kids Chapter Check-Ins –

My students found this escape room to be very engaging at the end of the school year, and I loved how it tied into what we were learning in Social Studies. Above all, I love how all of the seller’s escape rooms follow the same format. I have now bought several and once I teach my students the process once, they can do any escape room that she makes without me having to spend time on directions. Because of this, it even makes a great activity for a sub.

  7. Megan W. –

This was the perfect addition to my unit! Thank you!

  8. Kristina B. –

I bought this resource 15 minutes before class because I had just found out my special was cancelled and had an extra 45 minutes to fill. This was absolutely perfect. No prep, just printed the reading packets together, stapled and cut the code sheets. My advice is to not give them the code sheets until they answered the questions some of my students tried to get away with not answering the questions and just cracking the code. I caught that real quick, lol. Easy prep, engaging, loved it!

  9. ann M. –

What a fun way to learn! I had my students work with a partner and everyone was engaged from beginning to end.
