Tips for Teaching a Timeline for Ancient Civilizations

Teaching students a timeline for ancient civilizations is daunting. There are so many ancient civilizations that deserve to be covered and explored. My hope is that today, I can take that task for you and make it a little bit easier to teach your students a timeline for ancient civilizations. Many options are available to you to make the job a little more manageable. There are websites devoted to ancient civilizations, videos, games, and readers that will help your students learn while honing their other skills!

Use National Geographic as a tool for teaching a timeline for ancient civilizations!

Do yourself a favor. Go to the National Geographic Webpage, click on the search bar, and find the timeline for ancient civilizations you are teaching in your class. Or, follow this link to see the National Geographic Ancient Civilizations here

From the National Geographic site, you will find a timeline for ancient civilizations all over the world. From ancient civilizations and people groups in nearly every continent, country, and people group, you will have almost too much information to present to your class. My recommendation would be to utilize that search feature for the specific civilization you are looking for and find the information relevant to your age group and class! 

Video Timeline for Ancient Civilizations

You can get lost on YouTube searching for student-appropriate material to aid in your teaching of a timeline for ancient civilizations. I know I have experienced that rabbit hole firsthand. Instead of getting frustrated, check out these videos to help you narrow your search!

Timeline’s Ancient Civilizations

Timeline has a page on YouTube specifically devoted to ancient civilizations. From Ancient Rome to Ancient Egypt and the history of the first men, you will find content for days to share with your students about a timeline for ancient civilizations. From their homepage, you will even find videos on the history of kings, princes, countries, and whole periods of time like the medieval middle ages. Fair warning, if you are a person who gets distracted easily by history, ahem…like me, you may be watching for your own enjoyment after a while. Stick to your task and find exactly what you need for your lesson on ancient civilizations today! 

National Geographic Videos

Yes, National Geographic has lots of great lesson plans and reading material for your class, but they also have great videos to help you teach a timeline for ancient civilizations. The National Geographic YouTube Channel has so many great options for teaching about ancient civilizations in your classroom. From ancient China to ancient Peru, your students will learn something exciting about a timeline for ancient civilizations in these videos. 

Reading Material to Explore a Timeline for Ancient Civilizations

One of the best ways to explore a timeline for ancient civilizations in your classroom is to encourage your students to read about them. Can you say boring? Well, your students will even if you disagree. Make reading fun by using some of my comprehension resources. Each resource has multiple activities ensuring your students have to read about an ancient civilization for comprehension several times. Games to Explore a Timeline for Ancient Civilizations

I love teaching about ancient civilizations so much that I have created a ton of fun resources and games for you to use in your classroom to help you and your students love them, too. From activities that require technology to those that are simply print-and-go, I have got you covered. 

Color-by-Number

After reading a text related to the timeline for ancient civilizations of your choice, students will use the reader to fill in a color-by-number picture based on comprehension questions. They will circle their answers to multiple-choice questions and based on those answers, they’ll color in the accompanying picture with coordinating colors. If they’ve answered the questions correctly, a picture related to the ancient civilization will appear! 

Digital Escape Rooms

Digital Escape Rooms are a favorite for learning about a timeline for ancient civilizations. Your students will get the opportunity to read and learn about an ancient civilization, answer questions, and solve riddles and puzzles to reveal an escape. 

Text Marking Detective

Text Marking Detective Resources are an activity that encourages students to mark up the text they are reading in order to better comprehend the material. Students will get task cards, recording sheets, and an early-finishers extra reading activity. This is a great activity to create a little competition and see who can finish first.

No matter how you choose to incorporate a timeline of ancient civilizations in your classroom, you can’t go wrong with the resources available through National Geographic, YouTube, reading materials, and fun activities.
