Do I really need an email list? (Yes, you do).

If you’ve been in the online business space at all, I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times: you need an email list!

But why, you’re probably thinking. I have my Facebook group, my Pinterest account, my Instagram followers. I don’t have time for an email list, and people hate giving away their email addresses anyway. Nope, that’s not for me.

Sound familiar?

I get it! I really do. I resisted the idea of an email list for my Teachers Pay Teachers store for a long time. Then, when I finally started one, I made ALL the mistakes. I tried all the things, spent way too much time and way too much money. Eventually, I landed on a formula for success, and I haven’t looked back.

My email list (once I figured out the right way to do it), has been a MAJOR game changer for my business.

So yes, allow me to add my voice to the chorus: You definitely need an email list!

6 reasons you need to start an email list ASAP

1.  An email list is the only platform you actually own.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter… those could all go away overnight. Let’s say you have a Facebook group with 10,000 members. If Facebook goes away, you have literally no ability to contact that loyal fan base. Poof. Disappeared.

But, Lisa, that seems highly unlikely. Facebook/Instagram/Twitter will always be there.

I admit, these do seem like monumental institutions, but they are still corporations, and corporations fail all the time. Platforms get hacked. Servers go down. Algorithms change. Just recently, Facebook made a ton of changes to their groups and business page functions.

It’s just not wise to put all your eggs in one social media basket. Especially one you have little to no control over.

That’s the beauty of email lists – Mark Zuckerberg can’t tell you what you can and cannot send to your email subscribers. He can’t tell you when/how often/what to include in your email content. He can’t shut down your account without warning.

Your email list is YOURS, and it can be the most powerful marketing tool you have for your business.

2.  Email lists are more effective than social media.

There are some really impressive stats out there about how massively effective email marketing is for businesses. I won’t bore you with all the numbers, but suffice it to say that people in the know – the ones with those marketing degrees – agree unanimously that email marketing is the way to go.

Have you heard the term ROI? Return on Investment? It’s the best way to measure how effective a strategy is at making you money.

I know I said I wouldn’t bore you with numbers, but this one is IMPRESSIVE. With all the capital letters.

Industry experts agree that email marketing delivers an average of 3,800 – 4,400% ROI. That means for every $1 spent on email marketing, you earn back $38-44.

Mind. Blown. 🤯

3People are constantly checking their inboxes.

Think about it: what is one of the first things you do when you wake up? Do you reach for your phone and check notifications? I bet your inbox is one of the first things you glance at. Me too.

And we’re not alone. There are over five billion active email accounts in the world, and an astounding 99% of people say they check their email at least once a day.

That’s a lot of inbox checking, friends! Get your content in there!

4An active email list can be your biggest source of revenue.

The goal of any good email marketing strategy should be to build a relationship with your subscribers. Before you try selling them anything at all, you’ll want to get to know who they are, what they struggle with, and how you can help them. Offer tons of value, be sensitive to their pain points, find ways to engage and listen to your audience.

When you do those things, your email list will become your most loyal fan base. They’ll jump at the chance to grab your latest offer, course, product, or service. And they’ll start telling all their friends, too.

Email marketing, when done well, can be pretty sweet. 😎

5You can get awesome data about your customers to better serve them.

The cool thing about email marketing today is that you can start with the basics or go all-in with segmentation and data analysis.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Lisa. Slow down with the fancy tech words.

Here’s the thing: for now, just keep that term “segmentation” in your back pocket. As you dive into email marketing, you’ll want to come back to it eventually. It can be magical for your email success.

The key thing to understand here is that as you learn more about your audience (and sort, or segment them), you can tailor offers and emails, especially for their unique needs.

*Have an opt-in freebie about time management? People who want that would probably love your new planner. Send ‘em a discount code!
*Have another opt-in about meal planning? Those people would probably love your course on how to prep 30 days of freezer meals. Tell ‘em about it!

See how segmentation has the possibility to work wonders for your revenue?

6. Your reach is so much greater with an email list.

Social media posts rarely get seen. Some statistics say that less than one percent (0.58% in fact) get seen and interacted with (source). Yikes!

On the flip side, an average email open rate is about 22%. That’s a huge difference, right? With email, there’s no worrying about how to beat the algorithm. Sure, there’s finesse to it, like how to write a killer subject line, but you won’t have some computer algorithm actively pushing your posts down in favor of the big influencers or paid advertisers.

Convinced about that email list yet?

I thought so 😎
