5 Fun Tips to Teach the Three Branches of Government

There are many ways to teach the three branches of government to your students. The tricky part is finding a way that is engaging, fun, and actually educational. For that, we explore books, resources, worksheets, and videos.

1. Books to Teach the Three Branches of Government

My go-to for teaching kids something new is a good book. There are quite a few options out there for a book to teach students the basics of the three branches of government, but here are some of my favorites.

The Adventures of Bill series

The Adventures of Bill is a series of 4 books that help students to easily understand how the government works and why the law is so important. These books follow Bill all around the United States and its territories as Bill learns the ins and outs of the law and being a good citizen.

The US Constitution

The book by Syl Sobel, J.D. entitled the U.S. Constitution and You is full of great information all about the U.S. Constitution which is what gives the different branches of the government their individual and collective powers. Dive into the three branches of government and then use this book for your next exploration into the U.S. Government.

Basics of Government

The Little Book of Government by Zach Bush may be aimed more at young readers, but there is a plethora of information contained for older learners, too! It is a great resource for the basics of the U.S. Government, the Constitution, the 3 branches of government, and democracy. It is a great book to begin talking about the U.S. Government with any age group of students.

2. Videos to Teach the Three Branches of Government

If you are allowed to show videos in your classroom, here are a few short clips that are worth the time and effort to engage your students.

Branches of Government

This video on the 3 Branches of Government, a Kids Educational Video from Kids Academy is a great one to start off your lessons on the 3 branches of government. This engaging video will introduce the U.S. Government to your students while explaining the 3 branches of government specifically. While it may seem complicated to remember and learn about the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of government, this video makes it easy to distinguish and have fun learning.

Entitled the 3-Ring Government by Schoolhouse Rock, this video is amazing. It is simplistic and easy to follow while engaging students with catchy tunes jam-packed with great information to teach the three branches of government.

3. Worksheets to Teach the Three Branches of Government

One of my favorite resources for teaching about the three branches of government is a worksheet resource you can print and hand out to your students. The Branches of Government Color-by-Number, Reading Passage, and Text Marking resource is exactly what you need. Students read a non-fiction passage and search for answers while marking evidence from the text. It is a great option for learning, reading, and answering comprehension questions about the three branches of government.
